The following list of policies is in alphabetical order and extracted from the main GLOSSARY. It is not meant to be definitive, but will serve as a guide for reference when compiling your insurance portfolio. |
Book Debts
Also known as "Accounts Receivable". Less common as an individual policy
as usually either included in or as an extension to Loss of Profits cover.
After you have invoiced your clients, but before payment is received you may
"lose" your records as a result of an insured event such as fire or theft.
You may have duplicate records, but if not, the insurance may compensate you
for your losses up to the sum stated on the policy.
Computer Systems
Loss, damage or breakdown of computers and some related equipment, including
wiring. Extensions include reinstatement of data, consulting engineer's fees,
increased cost of working, replacement of software and increased rental charges.
Employers' Liability
This is a statutory requirement and includes a wide selection of direct
and indirect employees, whether paid or not. Providing an indemnity for legal
liability in respect of bodily injury, death, disease, or illness sustained
by your employees and arising out of their normal course of employment.
Engineering Inspection
Amongst the many items of legislation about the work place are the "Provision
and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998" and "The Lifting Operations and
Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998" The considerable numbers of items encompassed
by these regulations require inspection/examination by a "competent person"
every 6 or 12 months, depending on the item. But legislative requirements
are not exclusive to these two recent examples and specialist Insurance Companies
are able to provide inspection and examination services.
Legal Expenses
A VITAL part of any insurance portfolio in the current climate of red
tape and litigation. Usually providing an indemnity of £50,000 for legal and
other expenses incurred as a result of employment disputes, VAT disputes,
Inland Revenue investigations, contract disputes, debt recovery, property
protection and tenancy disputes. Also included is FREE 24-hour legal help
line.
Motor Trade or Garage Combined
Commercial combined policy with many optional sections to include cover
for buildings/plant & machinery/ general stock/ customers' cars/ sales cars/fuel
in tanks/ petrol pumps and forecourt fittings/ cash/glass/loss of profits/goods
in transit/employers' liability/public liability including defective workmanship/engineering
inspection for pressure vessels and lifting gear/legal expenses/road risks.
Motor Trade Liability, Product Liability
A single policy to cover employers', product and public liability risks
as required. Suits small businesses such as vehicle collection & delivery
services, valeters, mobile mechanics and car lots.
MOT Test Certificate
Licence cover
provides
an insured amount to compensate for loss of profits resulting from the withdrawal
or suspension of the MOT test licence. The financial consequences of such
an action by The Vehicle Inspectorate could be enough to close dependent businesses
down and will certainly leave a large hole in the profit and loss account.
Not only would valuable testing income be lost but also the associated repair
and servicing work. There is no substitute for vigilance in managing the licence,
but this insurance can soften the financial blow if the licence is withdrawn.
Public Liability
Providing an indemnity in respect of the legal liability arising in connection
with your business to pay damages as a result of death disease or bodily injury
or loss or damage to property of members of the Public (excluding employees).
Road Risks
Cover for own and customers' vehicle whilst being driven or kept at the
place of business. Frequently excludes cover whilst at the private residence
of the motor trader. A very limited form of cover which may be extended to
include public liability and defective workmanship covers.
